A mobile court on Saturday has fined 15 brick kiln workers Tk 7.5 lakh for cutting riverbank soil at Babuganj upazila in Barishal.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, acting on a tip-off, a raid, led by Babuganj upazila nirbahi officer, was carried out on the banks of Arial Khan River adjacent to Zambia Khatun Madrassah and Kashiganj market at Kedarpur union of the upazila and detained the workers. In primary interrogation, the workers said that they were working for Fatema Bricks in Babuganj.
The convicted workers are – Amirul Islam, 23, Babul Gain, 27, Sirajul Islam, 36, Monirul Sardar, 40, Zakir Gazi, 25, Shaheen Sardar, 36, Asadul, 35, Yakub, 30, of Assasuni upazila of Satkhira district, Nazrul Islam, 45, Raihan Sardar, 40, Monirul Islam, 42, Al Amin, 34, Asadul, 36, Yunuch, 51, and Ajir, 35, of different upazilas in Barishal.
Babuganj upazila executive officer Shakila Rahman said that on information, a raid was conducted on the banks of Arial Khan River in Kedarpur union of the upazila according to Balumahal and Soil Management Act-2010.
At that time, 15 workers were detained with three trawlers and everyone was fined Tk 50,000 by the mobile court, he added.
Later, the workers were released on payment of fines, but three trawlers were kept in police custody.
