Department of Water personnel and its contractor will be accessing meter boxes islandwide as part of water service line inspections to identify pipe materials delivering water to residential homes and businesses in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revision drinking water rules. Inspection Services
Inspections are scheduled to begin next week. Customers are being provided notification by phone and via door notice if a water service line inspection is scheduled for their property.
Water service will not be impacted during the inspections; however, customers are asked to ensure their water meter boxes are accessible by removing parked vehicles, landscaping or other debris that may block personnel access. Water meters are typically located near the county roadway or sidewalk outside of the property line.
During inspections, DOW and its contractor will be opening water meter boxes to visually determine the pipe material in the water meter box and will conduct a visual inspection of the above ground waterline that enters the home. If the pipe material of the waterline entering the home cannot be easily identified, DOW personnel may request access from the property owner to conduct the inspection on their property.
Water service line inspections will be conducted monthly beginning Jan. 29, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays, through approximately May 2024 or until all required inspections are completed.
Official inspection personnel can be easily identified by their DOW employee or DOW contractor photo identification and will be arriving in an official DOW vehicle. DOW employees and their contractors will never ask for payment or personal information from customers while working in the field or during these inspections.
